Today I visited a Genetic Counselor. Yes, that’s a job. I found out only 5-10% of cancers are hereditary. Wait. WHAT?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been walking around assuming that as long as I didn’t smoke, didn’t eat asbestos, and my parents didn’t have cancer, I’d be fine.
That’s a lie.
According to science, 95% of cancer cases are caused by lifestyle, exposure, or random.
95% of cancer is lifestyle,
exposure, or ‘random’.
This changes everything. I thought I was kinda off the hook because my parents are cancer free.
Nope. Your family is the least of your problems. We have a lot more control over our cancer risks than we realize.
I’m not going to get into all the risk factors here, things science knows, or things still unknown, etc. But it does make me stop and ask:
What simple step can I take today
to decrease my risk of cancer?
